21st Bike Rally
Amount Raised
Fundraising Goal $16,500.00

My Message

I am embarking once again on something amazing and I want you to join me!

I have found it challenging to develop my campaign story for this year’s fundraising for my ride on the 21st annual Friends For Life Bike Rally. This might come as a shock since I am a Co-Team Lead for Fundraising. Do not think for a second that fundraising is easy. It was the most challenging part of my first ride and it was the most rewarding.

I am cycling again and you made my ride to Montreal possible last year. Though this year will be very different.

Last year I road for the past though this year I ride for the future. 50 Years ago this June everything changed in the Gay (and therefor LGBTD2S ) movement. The Stonewall Riots in NYC which started June 28th, 1969 was the communities first stance that it was not acceptable to be treated differently. All these years later we still struggle for acceptance and equal footings in many aspects of daily life. This is very much the case for those living with HIV and AIDS. Stigma and misinformation is still real. Many people living with the virus in Toronto live on the fringe of the poverty line and look for assistance every day.

As a gay man in his 41st year it is amazing that I am only an ally to those living with the virus. Something that I have previously said in my last ask was that this is not a choice of any person. A most difficult situation that comes because of love or life exploration.

I stand on this side of a fence that can easily be blown down. For those on the other side I have become so educated in the last year. I stand to educate more.

This is my campaign for my second ride:

As many of you may realise my fundraising campaign is starting much later this year. This is for a great reason. Instead of concentrating on my goal, I have been spending much of my volunteer time working as the co-lead of fundraising for the Bike Rally and helping those who need the support. This year I have dedicated my time to those who need it and have stepped up to a be part of the leadership of the Bike Rally. As a second time rider I am co-lead of fundraising and a co-lead team captain. Second year riders sometimes fill these roles but these two rolls are seldom taken up together.

I am committing for my fundraising accomplishments that for every $100 given to my #F4LBR campaign, I will donate $5 to CATIE which is Canada’s source for HIV and Hepatitis C Information. If I reach the same bar as last year I will be giving $1,200.

I do this because there are true facts, knowledge is power and we are stronger together.

PWA in Toronto:

What I didn’t know about this vital service in my own community astounded me. It’s 2019 and HIV / AIDS is still shrouded in stigma and the mistaken belief that anti-viral drugs have all but eliminated this disease. Not true. People continue to contract HIV and many are not part of the LGBTQ2 community. During these months of training I’ve also had the opportunity to hear stories from PWA clients; some are horrible, others heart warming. Let me tell you how PWA touches the lives of its clients…

Some PWA Facts:

- One-quarter of Canada’s HIV positive population live and access care at PWA

- Every year PWA provides over 30,000 unique services to more than 2,750 individuals

- PWA provides assistance in four category areas:

1. Practical Support including financial assistance and the ‘Essentials Market’ which unlike a traditional food is capable of catering to each clients specific needs and desires making them feel empowered

2. Community Access which connects clients to a vast array of services and supports throughout the greater community

3. Health & Therapeutic Care which includes acupuncture, massage therapy, Reiki, Reflexology, harm reduction, naturopathic care, and health education

4. Dreaming & Engagement which brings day-to-day services which you and I take for granted into the lives of those who desperately need them

The Toronto to Montreal  Friends for Life Bike Rally is the sustaining fundraiser for PWA typically providing 40%of the agency’s budget.

To learn more about all the ways PWA provides for it’s clients, from health & therapeutic care to housing support to practical support, check out www.pwatoronto.org.

The Breakdown:

It’s 600 km to Montreal, it’s 6 days of cycling and a $6,000 target for me to bring in. (I have raised my goal to $14,000 becasue I know I can do more). This is a challenging goal but I believe doable. The numbers work out like this:

It’s a modest $10 per km but riding 100 km each day means $1000 and I’ll be on my bike for 6 days.

In Judaism, donations to charity or “Tzedakah” are often done in multiples of 18. In Hebrew, this number stands for life and this charity is dedicated to helping people whose lives face an uncertain future. By using the formula we give in multiples of 18 symbolizing multiple lives. I’ve used this ancient algorithm to make my own $360 contribution to the Friends for Life Bike Rally so that I can affect as many lives as possible. Will you join me on my ride and make a difference?

Along the way I will be micro blogging my journey to get myself ready for the ride and giving daily updates as I cycle to Montreal. You can tune into my Strava cycling profile at goo.gl/UHXgKf.

Will you join me on my journey? Please consider this important cause by choosing your multiple and don't forget that all donations over $20 receive at charitable tax receipt.

Thank you for your support,
